The long-standing collaboration of GET with the Municipality of Athens Computer Development Societe Anonyme (DAEM SA) continues with the undertaking of a new project, which involves providing services for the development of a web-based cartographic interface for the dissemination of excerpts of building regulations and related layers of information. The goal of the project is to improve access for citizens and professionals to the city’s geospatial data.

The Municipality of Athens already has an advanced geospatial information management infrastructure that collects and organizes data such as community boundaries, building blocks, building regulation details, public spaces, schools, and parking areas. The new webGIS application is being developed with the goals of:

  • Simplifying access to thematic data and building regulations for citizens, professionals, researchers, and administrative bodies.
  • Providing printable excerpts and map compositions with integrated legend, header, and scale information.
  • Enhancing interoperability with the Municipality’s existing GIS services.

The application will offer users the following capabilities:

  • Navigation and search: Zoom, pan, search by KAEK, address, or building block number.
  • Visualization of information layers: Urban boundaries, land use, protection zones, building coefficients, buildings, streets, and more.
  • Interactive tools: Distance and area measurement, building block inspection, and complex geospatial queries.
  • Export and print: Excerpts and map compositions in PDF format.
  • Interoperability: Use of WMS/WFS services and connection to the Municipality’s existing GIS data.

The new webGIS application will be based on open technologies such as PostgreSQL/PostGIS, Geonode, and GeoServer, ensuring interoperability, scalability, and reliability.

Upon completion of development, the application will facilitate access to accurate and up-to-date geospatial information, support urban planning and property management, and strengthen the digital outreach of the Municipality of Athens.

GET continues to implement innovative geoinformatics solutions that combine cutting-edge technology with high functionality to address real needs of local government. One such critical need is the management of urban planning data by local authorities, an area where GET has extensive expertise, providing related services to dozens of municipalities. Examples include the Municipalities of Heraklion, Chania, Agia Paraskevi, Aigaleo, Maroussi, Igoumenitsa, Ilion, Keratsini-Drapetsona, Papagou-Cholargos, Syros-Hermoupolis, Chalandri, Oraiokastro, among others.
