GEOSPATIAL ENABLING TECHNOLOGIES (GET) successfully completed the project “Development Services of a Geospatial Information System to support the management of the Zagori area as a registered Cultural Landscape on the UNESCO World Heritage List.”
To address the management needs of the Zagori area as a cultural asset, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, and to ensure the structured and systematic organization and monitoring of the large volume of geospatial data related to its cultural and natural heritage, GET developed an integrated Geospatial Information System, based on the standards of Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI) implementation.
The infrastructure serves as a repository and dissemination hub for geospatial information concerning the cultural assets of Zagori, enabling centralized management, systematic updates, and data visualization. The system integrates datasets collected through the initiatives of the Region of Epirus, in collaboration with the Municipality of Zagori and the competent bodies of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture—in particular, the Service of Modern Monuments and Technical Works of Epirus, Ionian Islands and Western Macedonia—as well as existing open data from third-party organizations.
Through this project, GET played a key role in providing technological support to the Zagori Management Plan, offering tools that strengthen the preservation, protection, and promotion of this unique cultural landscape.
This initiative was part of the broader efforts for the inclusion of Zagori in the UNESCO World Heritage List, highlighting the importance of technology in safeguarding Greece’s cultural and natural heritage.
As part of this ongoing effort, the Zagori Association of Athens is organizing, on Sunday, November 16th at 10:30 a.m., a conference dedicated to Zagori and its inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List. During the event, the actions and outcomes that led to this significant achievement will be presented.
GEOSPATIAL ENABLING TECHNOLOGIES is proud to have contributed, through its expertise and innovation, to the development of a sustainable, technology-driven approach for the management and protection of Zagori — a place of exceptional cultural and natural value.
