Weather numerical forecast system of very high accuracy

PROFILE

METEO and National Observatory of Athens, in cooperation with the Greek Research and Technology Network (GRNET S.A., and  Geospatial Enabling Technologies company support the Olympic sailing team (with catamaran boats) HELLENIC WIND  for its efforts to take a very good place in the forthcoming Olympic Games in Rio in Brazil.

The development of the system had as an objective the support, on volunteer base, of the Olympic sailing team (with catamaran boats) HELLENIC WIND during the Olympic Games of Rio 2016. The forecast system application took place in a pilot base, daily with the use of super-computing infrastructure (ARIS) of GRNET. For the visualization of forecasting data, modern web mapping tools were used, developed voluntarily by GET. In this way, our sailors had access to high quality forecasts regarding the wind as well as other meteorological parameters for Rio’s Bay in Brazil. Access into forecasts was made through two basic channels, which were designed in order to cover the needs of our sailors: (a) Automatic daily reports (Meteo Briefing & Meteo Outlook), sent everyday via email, automated meteorological reports with summary of expected meteorological conditions for the current and the next day, based on very high accuracy forecast (200m x 200m) and (b) Map products provided by exclusive access into web mapping application regarding forecasts of very high accuracy (200 m x 200 m) and high resolution (1 km x 1 km).
